Štvanice Footbridge
The footbridge was designed by Petr Tej, Marek Blank and Jan Mourek on the basis of an international competition organised by the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague.
The gentle spatial curve is designed as a smooth path based on the dynamics of pedestrian and cyclist movement. The design concept of the bridge responds humbly to the Prague skyline, the connection to the Holešovice and Karlin banks and the ramp connection to Štvanice Island. The design does not go up in height, it does not obstruct pedestrians and cyclists' views of the city, water and trees.
The bridge deck is supported by two embankment abutments, two piers on the edges of the Štvanice Island to interfere with the island as little as possible, and two piers in the non-navigable arm of the Vltava River. The ramp, whose plan curve follows the curve of the edge of the island, descends freely onto Štvanice Island.
The outermost field of the structure drops below the flood level to the level of the pavement on the embankment for a barrier-free and smooth connection on the Holešovice side. This bay is designed to be vertically movable at the abutment where a hydraulic piston mechanism is located to provide vertical lift above the level of the millennial water. This is a lift of approximately 3 m when the field is rotated around the overhanging end at the first pier in the Vltava River.
The architecture of the bridge uses minimalist sculptural morphology. The bridge is made of high quality ultra high performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) with a surface matching glossy white marble.
The main superstructure of the bridge consists of a continuous reinforced concrete girder with longitudinal prestressing and an H-shaped cross section. In terms of fabrication and assembly, it is a segmental bridge structure consisting of 57 precast elements.
The structure includes an ornamental bronze handrail with figural motifs of animal heads at the ends by sculptor Aleš Hvízdal. The lighting of the footbridge is integrated in the handrail. On the island of Štvanice at the entrance to the footbridge there is a figurative sculpture called River by sculptor Jan Hendrych.
