Footbridge over the River Loučná in Litomyšl

The footbridge over the Loučná River in Litomyšl was built as part of an urban planning and landscape design project for the redevelopment of the riverbank designed by Martin Rusina and Martin Frei. The aim of the project was to renew and connect four different types of urban spaces - the embankment, the river bank, the park and the street - into one functional unit. The footbridge is conceived as a transparent steel structure, interfering as little as possible with the natural surroundings. The chosen solution includes a deliberate playful element - the footbridge is a swing. It is designed as a suspended structure on longitudinal steel strips with a prefabricated steel bridge deck. The span of the structure is 23.5 m. The construction is based on the principle of overhanging steel girders on which the bridge deck is placed. The bridge deck is made up of prefabricated panels composed of several transverse steel strips. The 1,00 m high steel railing is made up of steel posts and handrail, which is broken after 3 m due to deformation of the bridge. The posts are anchored between the steel strips of the bridge deck. The footbridge structure is based on two reinforced concrete footings, placed at an unfrozen depth. The surface of the bridge deck allows direct drainage of rainwater into the watercourse and onto the ground beneath the footbridge.
